Technobabble

The other day I heard this story about a person that goes into their local cell phone dealer looking to buy a smart phone.  One of the features they wanted was an easy way to listen to podcasts.  Well, it turned out the store employee had no idea what a podcast was.

So, this got me thinking, how many other terms out there are people not familiar with?  After doing a little digging, online and through my own brain I came up with a very short list.

Some of these terms have to do with computing itself, the Internet or slang that has developed from the online world.  By the way, you can click on the word itself to read more about it.

Let's start with the word that spawned this blog.

Podcast - The name, which combines iPod and broadcast is defined as an audio or video file that can be downloaded to a portable media player or computer, usually on a regularly scheduled basis.

Megahertz - It is used to measure transmission speeds of electronic devices. The most common area you will see Megahertz used is in measuring processor clock speed, such as an 800 Mhz Pentium III.

Internet Meme - Is an inside joke that a large number of Internet users are in on. It may stay the same or evolve over time, by chance or through commentary, imitations, and parody versions. Internet memes have a tendency to evolve and spread extremely swiftly, sometimes going in and out of popularity in just days.  One of the most famous examples is the Rick Roll.

QWERTY - This term is used to describe a standard (Latin alphabet-based) keyboard. Why? Because the first six keys in the upper-left part of the keyboard spell out Q-W-E-R-T-Y.

Web 2.0 - Is the next generation of the Internet and is basically a combination of technologies that provide a level user interaction that was not available before. Web 2.0 websites are much more dynamic and interconnected, producing "online communities" and making it even easier to share information. Ala Facebook, Wikipedia, Youtube, etc.

Okay, I think that's enough for now but we may have to do a technobabble part 2 blog one of these days.

Thanks for reading.

Dangerous Dave.
